Edina Goes
3-2 in District Play Season Ends with 24-12 Record
Post 471 won 3 games in the District 10 tournament, but
came 1 win short of a return trip to State. Edina opened with a 3-2 win over Ham Lake (Blaine HS) behind 8 innings
of great pitching from Paddy Carroll. James Dean and Danny Smith finished the game. Joey Kopp's basehit in
the bottom of the 8th put Edina ahead.
In Game 2, Edina won another tight ballgame, 1-0 over Bloomington Gold.
James Dean pitched 8 1/3 of scoreless ball. Smith once again got the save. Edina manufactured its lone run behind
a walk, sacrifice bunt, ground out, and an infield hit by Andrew Fink, scoring Chris Eckberg in the 5th inning.
In
Game 3, Edina ran into a buzzsaw, losing 15-0 to top ranked Eden Prairie. With the starting nine out by the 4th inning,
Edina bided its time before turning its attention to Maple Grove in Game 4.
Danny Smith got the start, and he pitched
another gem. He went the whole way, getting the complete 9 inning win, 7-3. The win paved the way for a re-match
of last year's District game against Excelsior.
Edina's bats never found their groove, and Paddy Carroll,
pitching on 2 days rest, couldn't hold back Excelsior this time around. Edina eventually lost 11-2, ending its season.
Edina Legion went 24-12 on the season, winning the St. Louis Park Tournament (for a 4th year in a row), finishing
4-1 in the Gopher Classic, and tieing for 3rd place in the South Hennepin.
Post 471 says good-bye to some exceptional
ball players, but could return 13 from this year's roster. Playing in their last Legion game were shortstop
Andrew Fink, thirdbaseman David Newman, outfielder/pitcher Sammy Wikoff, secondbaseman Cole Erlandson, and outfielder/pitcher
Chris Eckberg.
